Become a Certified Professional Electrologist

Certified Professional Electrologist badge

The American Electrology Association believes that one of the most important steps an electrologist can take in their career development is to become board certified.

The Certified Professional Electrologist (CPE) credential signifies that your knowledge has been tested and measured against a national standard of excellence. Your commitment to keeping the credential, through ongoing continuing education, exemplifies the highest degree of professionalism.

The CPE Credential Is Important

Board certification is recognized as going above and beyond what is required. As a voluntary credential, this helps promote you as a true professional committed to continuing education pursuits

Board certification demonstrates to other professionals, as well as to the public at large, that you are serious about enhancing your knowledge - thereby better serving them.

Maintaining your certification keeps you aware of changes in the profession and gives you the tools to respond to those changes. This accomplishment is evidence of a pursuit for excellence and the ability to meet standards and requirements.

CPE Examination

The American Electrology Association (AEA) and Prometric have improved the availability of the CPE Examination by offering computer-based testing and registration. This change allows electrologists the freedom to select from available examination dates and to choose a Prometric testing center that is convenient to their location.

Study Materials

A Study Guide has been published by IBEC from which many of the test questions were formulated. The Study Guide was developed to aid in preparation for the Certified Professional Electrologist (CPE) board certification exam. It should be noted however, that it is not meant to be the sole resource for the seventh generation of exams.

Ancillary texts such as "Cosmetic and Medical Electrolysis & Temporary Hair Removal" by Richards & Meharg, and "Milady's Hair Removal Techniques" by Bickmore are also suggested study materials.

In addition, the AEA Infection Prevention Standards for the Practice of Electrolysis and the Standards of Practice for Electrologists are included in their entirety for review and study. The Infection Prevention Standards contained therein were updated in 2023 and are the definitive resource for the exams for all matters related to sterilization, disinfection, asepsis, hygiene, and safety as it relates to instruments, supplies, an office (or work place), the client, and the electrologist.

The above-referenced resources are the only recommended study materials for the CPE exams.
